SERIAL MOM
The goal of this project was to design a movie poster. I chose Serial Mom, a dark comedy that blends satire and camp with a unique, twisted sense of humor. The poster needed to capture the film’s playful yet sinister tone, reflecting the duality of its main character, Beverly Sutphin.
PROCESS
Knowing that John Waters' aesthetic would be the perfect fit for this project, I was determined to encapsulate that iconic energy in every design element. His playful, subversive style—where the bizarre is elevated to art—resonated with the tone I wanted to evoke. I made sure to infuse the poster with a touch of campy excess, ensuring that the design not only paid homage to the film’s quirky essence but also captured the essence of Waters’ world.
This is why I chose a trashy poster mock-up, evoking the feel of a weathered, low-rent movie theater on a side street in Baltimore. It’s a nod to Waters’ love for the raw, unpolished charm of underground cinema, where the unrefined and unconventional thrive. To begin, I revisited key scenes and iconic imagery from the film, focusing on elements that reflect the character’s suburban charm and her violent tendencies. I explored various concepts, experimenting with bold, contrasting colors and typography to evoke both the quirky, offbeat humor and the tension inherent in Beverly’s dual nature. After sketching out several compositions, I refined the design to feature striking visuals—a mix of retro typography and modern graphic elements that would appeal to both fans of the film and newcomers.
The final deliverables include a dynamic and memorable movie poster that captures the essence of Serial Mom—a blend of humor, horror, and satire. The design uses vibrant colors, playful fonts, and subtle nods to the film’s themes, making it a unique and attention-grabbing piece that stands out while remaining true to the film’s spirit.
