FREAK The goal of this project was to create a magazine - I made Freak Mag, a satirical lifestyle magazine that critiques Earth culture through an alien perspective, using typography fundamentals and experimental design techniques to create a visually unique and engaging publication. The project focused on combining eccentricity with functional design, ensuring that both the content and layout spoke to the magazine’s offbeat, humorous, and rebellious tone.
PROCESS
To begin, I researched and gathered inspiration from a variety of unconventional sources, including vintage Mod magazines, psychedelic artwork, and classic editorial publications like The New Yorker, which influenced the more structured aspects of the design. I aimed to blend the rebellious, offbeat elements with the clean, sophisticated typography and layouts seen in traditional editorial work. Using typography fundamentals, I experimented with bold typefaces, dynamic spacing, and unconventional layouts to create a balanced yet visually eccentric design.
I played with experimental typography treatments, juxtaposed with clean and structured elements, creating a tension between chaos and order. I also incorporated imagery and graphics that enhanced Freak Mag's surreal, alien perspective, using collage techniques and a mix of hand-drawn and digital elements. The final result is a publication that feels both nostalgic and futuristic, with a unique voice that critiques Earth culture. The deliverables include the completed magazine layout, cover, and sample spreads, all reflecting Freak Mag's eccentric energy and humor, while still honoring the editorial craftsmanship seen in classic publications.
